TSA Anticipates Record-Breaking Labor Day Weekend

TSA Anticipates Record-Breaking Labor Day Weekend

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is gearing up for what it’s projecting to be the busiest Labor Day weekend on record.

This summer has been record-breaking for air travel, and its unofficial final weekend will be no different. Between Thursday, Aug. 29 and Wednesday, Sept. 4, the TSA expects to screen more than 17 million people, with Friday, Aug. 30 anticipated to be a peak travel day at 2.68 million passengers.

“People are traveling more than ever this summer and TSA along with our airline and airport partners stand ready to close the busiest summer travel period on record during this upcoming Labor Day weekend,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “I commend our vigilant workforce, from our TSOs on the front lines at airport security checkpoints across the country to those behind the scenes, working hard to keep the transportation system secure—especially as we continue to roll out new checkpoint technology that improves security effectiveness, efficiency, and the passenger experience.”

The agency’s top 10 travel days of all-time have all occurred since May 2024. On July 7, travel hit its peak with 3 million people screened by the TSA.

Since Memorial Day weekend, the TSA has screened 239.8 million people, which averages 2.7 million people per day. That’s an 8.5% increase from last year’s travel numbers.

In preparation for the high passenger volume this coming holiday weekend, the TSA recommends travelers enroll in TSA Pre-Check, which has faster waiting times of 10 minutes and under compared to 30 minutes and under for standard screening lanes.

Some other TSA tips: pack smart by starting with an empty bag, arrive at the airport early, have an acceptable ID at the ready, call ahead to request passenger support for those with disabilities, and importantly, pack patience and be respectful of airport workers.

Travelers can also send any questions to 275-872 (“AskTSA”) or through @AskTSA on X or Facebook Messenger.
