American Airlines Is Launching its Own Digital ID Lanes

American Airlines flyers will soon have access to the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) Touchless ID option at select U.S. airports.

According to an announcement Thursday, American is partnering with the TSA to give its AAdvantage members access to streamlined security lanes, similar to those already available for Delta and United flyers. The option is set to roll out in the coming months.

It has not been announced which airports will feature the lanes, though other airlines have introduced them first at their major hubs. American’s hubs currently include Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, and several others.

The lanes allow travelers to trade access to their biometrics for access to Touchless ID security lanes, often the fastest way through airport security. Rather than having TSA officers manually check IDs, the system matches a customer’s image with their passport photo, allowing for a hands-free experience.

The Touchless ID option is also available for bag checks with some airlines, including Delta.

Flyers need a Known Traveler Number (KTN), which you get with PreCheck or another Known Traveler Program, and can opt-in through their airline app. Once they do, their boarding passes will indicate access to the Digital ID lanes.

“We want to give our customers an easy experience while they move through every point of their travel journey, and the airport is a big part of that,” said Kim Cisek, American’s vice president of customer experience. “Introducing this option will help customers move more seamlessly from the airport lobby through TSA security to enjoy the next step in their travel.”

While American rolls out this feature, other airlines are expanding their own options.

Delta recently announced that it was adding the option to Salt Lake City International (SLC) and will add Ronald Reagan Airport (DCA) in Washington, D.C., next. Delta says the option is 75% faster than standard transactions at bag drop and 60% faster than the standard security experience, dropping the transaction time with an agent from 20 to 25 seconds to 7 to 10 seconds.
