American Airlines to Temporarily Suspend New York to Cancun Flights

American Airlines is suspending service from New York (JFK) to Cancun (CUN) in September and October, with flights resuming on Nov. 5.

The move to seasonally adjust the route is part of the airline’s evaluation of “capacity growth plans for 2024.” When service restarts, there will be up to twice daily flights between the cities.

“We’re making this adjustment now to ensure we’re able to re-accommodate customers on affected flights and we apologize for any inconvenience to our customer’s travel journeys,” American said in a statement.

“We’re taking a closer look at our own growth plans in the back half of the year and are making adjustments to bring our capacity down versus our prior plans,” American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said. “At this point, we expect to slow our rate of growth from just over 8% in the first half of the year to approximately 3.5% in the second half of the year.”

The change will not impact American’s recent announcement to expand its winter schedule by bringing new routes to Latin America and the Caribbean later this year.
