Why Go? The Power of Personal Connections at Travel Trade Events

Why Go? The Power of Personal Connections at Travel Trade Events

For many of us, it has been a very erratic road returning to in-person travel industry events, or even live events at all. I can count on one hand the times I have been in a movie theatre or concert since the pandemic, yet I am a lifelong learner and I missed being part of something bigger than myself with opportunities to help my clients dream bigger. That’s why I am thrilled to attend TMP West in Vancouver starting today.

There’s both an undeniable allure and apprehension. I can feel my heart quicken when I walk into a bustling conference hall, adorned with banners promising new and exotic destinations and untold adventures. This is where the magic happens, where industry professionals come together to share insights, forge partnerships, and chart new courses for success. It’s an opportunity to be seen and heard. We also want to ensure that we are using our time wisely, as conferences are a true time commitment, often with conflicts.

Still, amidst the sea of faces and the whirlwind of activity, it’s the personal interactions that truly set these events apart. In a world where emails and phone calls often serve as the primary means of communication, there’s something refreshingly human about meeting decision-makers and executives face-to-face. It’s in these moments of shared laughter and animated conversation that real connections are made, paving the way for future collaborations and mutual success.

Your mission- (seemingly) impossible, maybe finding the best tour operator, DMC, or new hotel for your seasoned traveler with a penchant for the path less traveled, emulating a television show, or simply creating experiences worthy of bragging rights. We advocate daily, for people with food challenges, physical or other disabilities, have more time than money, or the other way around.

Rubbing elbows with decision-makers and executives
Amidst the hustle and bustle, it’s the personal connections for me, that truly set these events apart, although I know that some come for the swag, the food, and the hopes of winning something that will take them away from all the challenges, chaos and change currently in our industry and our world.

These encounters are more than just fleeting moments; they’re the building blocks of lasting relationships that can propel your business to new heights. I totally embrace the power of face-to-face interactions, gratefully seizing opportunities to meet the decision-makers and executives who can give me better insights, handle any issues, and of course, give me inspiration and possibly quotes for my articles and the book that I am co-authoring with Giora Israel, former VP of Carnival on the “future of cruising” as well as updating his seminal Dictionary of Cruise Terms which require 2 decades of updating the ever-changing world of cruise terminology, replete with anecdotes and updated nuances of older terminology.

From CEOs of major travel brands to founders of niche boutique agencies, trade events offer unparalleled access to industry leaders. Rubbing elbows isn’t just about networking; it’s about gaining insights, fostering collaborations, and staying ahead of the curve. So, don’t be afraid to dive in and introduce yourself – you never know where these connections may lead.

So, after all, What’s really in it for you?
What’s a trade event without a healthy dose of good-natured banter and a touch of friendly competition? Do you love competing in friendly knowledge-based games to win trips and goofy prizes or are you trying to delve into the seemingly mysterious worlds of social marketing and AI? Either way, the shared experiences and shared laughter are what make these events truly memorable.

Perhaps the greatest gift of all lies outside of the swag bag, the buffet, and the bar. For me, it’s the sense of community and camaraderie that permeates these events. In a world where technology often serves as a barrier to genuine human connection, there’s something truly special about coming together with like-minded individuals who share your passion for exploration and discovery. Whether you’re swapping stories over cocktails at the evening mixer or bonding over a shared passion for obscure travel trivia, the friendships forged at these events are as enduring as the memories of the journeys you will create for others, which is really what brought you there.
