HX, formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions, has appointed Gebhard Rainer as its new CEO, effective July 15. Current Hurtigruten Group CEO Daniel Skjeldam, who has also been serving as HX, will transition to a role as a board member in Hurtigruten Group as of June 15.

According to the company, Gebhard’s appointment marks a significant step towards HX achieving full autonomy with its own Executive Leadership Team and board.

“We have now set the right direction for HX, both when it comes to introducing a new brand and establishing and executing the first parts of the new long-term strategy,” said Skjeldam. “With the split between Hurtigruten and HX in its final phase, I believe the timing is ideal to bring in a dedicated CEO for HX to develop the company to its full potential.”

Rainer brings with him a wealth of experience. He joins HX after serving as CEO of Sandals Resorts International. He also served in a variety of capacities at Hyatt for more than 25 years. Outside of the tourism industry, Rainer served as president and CEO at Coach.

“With his proven leadership and strategic acumen, knowledge of the U.S. market and successfully running a company with strong ties to the travel trade, Rainer is ideally positioned for this key role in HX’s forward journey,” Skjeldam added.
