The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) on Friday announced that Jason Liberty, the current president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, has been appointed chairman by its board of directors.

Liberty takes over from MSC Cruises’ Pierfrancesco Vago, who had been serving in the same position since January 2021. Liberty will now be tasked with providing leadership to CLIA’s Global Executive Committee and Board of Directors, including guiding them towards sustainability goals and embracing new technologies onboard.

“I am excited and honored to lead this organization as we enter a new era of cruising. With consumer demand continuing to accelerate, we are doubling down on our commitment to decarbonization and sustainable growth, ensuring that we are not only investing in our oceans and communities, but preserving them for generations of travelers to come,” Liberty said.

“I look forward to working with CLIA leadership and our partners around the world to further position cruise vacations as an accessible and responsible option for today’s travelers that create positive ripple effects across the globe.”

While Liberty has served in his current role since early 2021, he has a cruising career that spans nearly two decades. He joined Royal Caribbean Group in 2005 and has served in several roles, including Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.
