Barry Sternlicht’s eco-luxury brand, 1 Hotels, will open its first property in Canada next year.

Slated to launch in the summer of 2020, the hotel will be inspired by “Canada’s natural beauty, the vibrant character of King Street West, and the Toronto marketplace,” said the hotelier.

Currently the Thompson Toronto, the downtown property will undergo an extensive transformation before being reflagged. It is being developed in partnership with Mohari Hospitality, a global real estate investment company and owner of the building.

Sustainability-driven, 1 Hotels incorporates biophilic design and brings nature indoors by reusing existing structural and reclaimed materials from the local community, including timber, driftwood and local limestone.

“We look forward to sharing our mission to inspire conscious consumption with guests from across the globe as well as the local community. Our partnership with Mohari is key to the re-development of the project, and we are pleased to be collaborating with them,” Sternlicht, 1 Hotels’ founder and CEO, and chairman of Starwood Capital Group, said.

1 Hotels, which launched in 2015 with the opening of exclusive properties in Miami’s South Beach and Manhattan’s Central Park, followed by Brooklyn (located on Pier 1) in February 2017. The brand most recently opened 1 West Hollywood in June, as one of the most energy-efficient hotels in Los Angeles.

The hotelier is set to continue to expand with properties under development in Nashville, Sunnyvale, Hanalei Bay, Cabo San Lucas, Paris, Haitang Bay, and Melbourne.
